Geachte leden van de Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation,

Hengelo, strategisch gelegen tussen Amsterdam en Berlijn, biedt een unieke kans voor de Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation om haar invloed en zichtbaarheid in Europa uit te breiden. Met 1,9 miljoen reizigers per jaar op de spoorverbinding tussen deze twee belangrijke steden, vormt Hengelo een ideaal tussenstation voor reizigers die op zoek zijn naar een culturele onderbreking van hun reis. Een Guggenheim in Hengelo zou een uitstekende gelegenheid bieden om een nieuwe groep bezoekers te verwelkomen en de aanwezigheid van de foundation in West-Europa verder te versterken.

Hengelo heeft de potentie om een culturele hotspot te worden, midden op de beroemde spoorlijn tussen Amsterdam en Berlijn, waar jaarlijks 1,9 miljoen cultuurreizigers passeren. Het is geen toeval dat ik dit voorstel nu doe: Hengelo, gelegen tussen twee grootsteden, heeft de energie, de ruimte en de geschiedenis om een Guggenheim te huisvesten. En ik ben er van overtuigd dat dit museum niet alleen onze regio zou transformeren, maar ook uw stichting een kans zou bieden om de culturele invloed van het Guggenheim merk verder te versterken en uit te breiden.

De voordelen voor de Guggenheim Foundation zouden aanzienlijk zijn. Naast de strategische ligging in West Europa biedt Hengelo een aantal unieke kenmerken die het tot een ideale locatie maken voor de vestiging van een Guggenheim:

  1. Strategische Locatie: Hengelo bevindt zich op de drukke spoorlijn tussen Amsterdam en Berlijn, die jaarlijks 1,9 miljoen reizigers trekt. Dit biedt de foundation de mogelijkheid om een breed en gevarieerd publiek aan te spreken, dat specifiek wordt aangetrokken door het museum en de cultuur van de regio. Bovendien heeft Twente een van de grootste binnenhavens van Nederland en is er een vliegveld.
  2. Toegang tot Unieke Kunstverzamelingen: De regio rondom Hengelo herbergt talrijke kastelen, landgoederen en adellijke families met aanzienlijke kunstcollecties. Ook is vanuit Hengelo een samenwerking met het Rijksmuseum Amsterdam en het Rijksmuseum Twente mogelijk. Een Guggenheim in Hengelo zou een belangrijke rol kunnen spelen in het tonen van collecties aan een breder internationaal publiek en tegelijkertijd de zichtbaarheid van de foundation vergroten.
  3. Culturele Verbinding tussen Nederland en Duitsland: De ligging van Hengelo, in het hart van Twente, aan de grens tussen Nederland en Duitsland biedt een uitstekende gelegenheid om de culturele samenwerking tussen deze twee landen te bevorderen en ook om juist het verleden een plek te geven. Dit zou niet alleen de culturele diversiteit van het museum versterken, maar ook de bredere aantrekkingskracht van de Guggenheim Foundation vergroten.
  4. Beschikbare Locatie: In het centrum van Hengelo, naast het station, ligt het voormalige Storkgebouw, een groot industrieel hallencomplex dat nu vrijkomt. Zowel de gemeente Hengelo als de projectontwikkelaar Trebbe zijn al bezig met het verzamelen van ideeën voor de herbestemming van deze locatie. Dit is de ideale plek voor het Guggenheim, met de benodigde ruimte, infrastructuur en zichtbaarheid.
  5. Economische Impuls voor de Regio: De komst van een Guggenheim zou niet alleen de culturele uitstraling van Hengelo versterken, maar ook een belangrijke economische impuls geven. Het zou bijdragen aan het versterken van het toerisme, de werkgelegenheid en de vastgoedmarkt in de Euregio.

De afgelopen jaren heb ik als Nachtburgemeester van Hengelo flink gelobbyd met dit idee en dat heeft een breed draagvlak gecreëerd en veel persaandacht gekregen.

De beschikbare locatie, de sterke regionale samenwerking en de culturele rijkdom maken Hengelo tot een logische keuze voor de uitbreiding van het Guggenheim-netwerk. Ik zou graag met de Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation in gesprek gaan om de mogelijkheden voor een Guggenheim in Hengelo verder te onderzoeken.

With 1.9 million travelers annually on the rail connection between these two major cities, Hengelo serves as an ideal stopover for travelers seeking a cultural break during their journey. A Guggenheim in Hengelo would provide an excellent opportunity to welcome a new group of visitors and further strengthen the foundation’s presence in Western Europe.

Hengelo has the potential to become a cultural hotspot, situated in the heart of the famous rail line between Amsterdam and Berlin, where 1.9 million culture travelers pass by each year. It is no coincidence that I am presenting this proposal now: Hengelo, located between two major cities, has the energy, the space, and the history to house a Guggenheim. I am confident that this museum would not only transform our region but also offer your foundation the opportunity to further enhance and expand the cultural influence of the Guggenheim brand.

The benefits for the Guggenheim Foundation would be substantial. In addition to its strategic location in Western Europe, Hengelo offers a number of unique features that make it an ideal location for a Guggenheim:

  1. Strategic Location: Hengelo is located on the busy rail line between Amsterdam and Berlin, attracting 1.9 million travelers annually. This offers the foundation the opportunity to engage a broad and diverse audience, specifically drawn to the museum and the region’s culture. Furthermore, Twente boasts one of the largest inland ports in the Netherlands and is home to an airport.
  2. Access to Unique Art Collections: The region surrounding Hengelo is home to numerous castles, estates, and noble families with significant art collections. Additionally, cooperation with the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and the Rijksmuseum Twente could be facilitated from Hengelo. A Guggenheim in Hengelo would play a vital role in showcasing these collections to a wider international audience, while also increasing the foundation’s visibility.
  3. Cultural Connection Between the Netherlands and Germany: Hengelo’s location in the heart of Twente, on the border between the Netherlands and Germany, presents an excellent opportunity to foster cultural cooperation between the two countries while also acknowledging their shared history. This would not only enhance the cultural diversity of the museum but also broaden the appeal of the Guggenheim Foundation.
  4. Available Location: In the center of Hengelo, next to the train station, lies the former Stork building, a large industrial hall complex that is now available for redevelopment. The municipality of Hengelo and the developer Trebbe are already collecting ideas for repurposing this location. This is the ideal site for the Guggenheim, offering the necessary space, infrastructure, and visibility.
  5. Economic Boost for the Region: The arrival of a Guggenheim would not only enhance Hengelo’s cultural profile but also provide a significant economic boost. It would contribute to strengthening tourism, employment, and the real estate market in the Euregio.

In recent years, I have lobbied heavily for this idea as the Night Mayor of Hengelo, and it has garnered widespread support and significant media attention.

The available location, strong regional cooperation, and cultural richness make Hengelo a logical choice for expanding the Guggenheim network. I would welcome the opportunity to engage with the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation to explore the possibilities of establishing a Guggenheim in Hengelo.
